Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology sees growth, promise of tumor ablation
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
The unprecedented growth and promise of using thermal ablation to target and kill cancer is the subject of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology's August supplement, "Thermal Ablation 2010: At the Crossroads of Past Success, Current Goals and Future Technology." (2010-08-27)

Silencing hepatitis B virus prevent recurrence of liver cancer
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
Previous studies have shown that antiviral treatment reduces the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). But now, researchers from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University are reporting that the antiviral therapy also prevents recurrence of HCC and extends patients' lives. Ablation proved as effective as traditional surgery in treating kidney cancer
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
A minimally invasive technique used to destroy kidney tumors with an electrically controlled heating probe showed similar effectiveness as surgical removal of tumors in curbing cancer recurrence rates for up to five years after treatment. (2010-06-03)

Visually-guided laser may be viable treatment for abnormal heartbeat
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
A new treatment known as a visually-guided laser-balloon catheter successfully interrupted abnormal electrical pulses in patients and pigs with intermittent, irregular heartbeats, in a study reported in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, a journal of the American Heart Association. (2010-05-26)

Cardiac procedure significantly reduces risk of Alzheimer's disease and stroke, researchers find
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
New findings by researchers from the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, reveals treatment of the most common heart rhythm disorder that affects more than two million Americans significantly reduces the risk of stroke, mortality, Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. (2010-05-14)

Genetic signatures provide new direction in liver cancer
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
Results of an international clinical study conducted in Europe and the US presented today at the International Liver CongressTM 2010, the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Liver in Vienna, Austria, have identified a genomic portrait able to predict recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the fifth most common cancer in men. Flexible electronics could help put off-beat hearts back on rhythm
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
Arrhythmic hearts soon may beat in time again, with minimal surgical invasion, thanks to flexible electronics technology developed by a team of University of Illinois researchers, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Northwestern University. (2010-03-25)

Laser surgery technique gets new life in art restoration
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
A laser technique best known for its use to remove unwanted tattoos from the skin is finding a second life in preserving great sculptures, paintings and other works of art, according to an article in ACS' monthly journal, Accounts of Chemical Research. (2010-02-25)

Common gene variant may increase risk for a type of cardiac arrhythmia
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
An international research team has identified a common gene variant associated with a form of the irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation. In their report in the journal Nature Genetics, being published online, the investigators describe finding that variations affecting a protein that may help control the heart's electrical activity appear to increase the risk of what is called lone atrial fibrillation (AF), a type seen in younger individuals with no other form of heart disease. Scientists discover molecular pathway for organ tissue regeneration and repair
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
Scientists have discovered a molecular pathway that works through the immune system to regenerate damaged kidney tissues and may lead to new therapies for repairing injury in a number of organs systems. (2010-02-16)

Radiofrequency ablation safe and effective for reducing pain from bone metastases
09/10/2010 02:19 PM
Image-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive cancer treatment which can be performed in the outpatient setting, significantly reduced the level of pain experienced by cancer patients with bone (osseous) metastases, limiting the need for strong narcotic pain management, and supporting improved patient frame of mind.
